INTUMESCENT PAINTS

Intumescent paints are used for passive fire protection. They can be applied using airless spray equipment for speed and quality finish, or you can use sizeable plural spray equipment. Brush and roller applications may also be preferred.

SUNNOFLAME IP: Water-based intumescent coating for structural steel
  • Specially designed as a passive fire protection for steel construction
  • Fire-retarding interior coating
  • Reduces heat penetration, flame spread, and smoke generation
  • Applies like regular paint
  • Water-based with low VOCs
  • Durable, smooth architectural finish
  • Quick and easy application and clean up
  • Forms a thick cellular char blanket to retard the flame spread
  • Single coat application: Use heavy-duty airless spray equipment and apply a wet film thickness (wft) of up to 1000 μm per coat. Thicker coats may cause sagging and affect drying and handling time.
  • Over-coating times: Refer to the product’s technical data sheet for the recommended minimum and maximum over coating times. Factors like coating thickness, steelwork configuration, access, project schedule, and other trade activities should be considered.
  • Multi-coat application: When the specified dry film thickness (DFT) exceeds 700 μm, apply multiple coats with a maximum wft of 700 μm per coat. Follow the recommended over-coating intervals between coats provided in the product’s technical data sheet.
  • Drying time and over coating intervals: Local environmental conditions determine drying time and over coating intervals. For a total DFT greater than 2000 μm, allow a 24-hour over coating interval between each coat of SUNNOFLAME IP at all temperatures. The over coating time depends on the desired total DFT. Actual drying time varies based on air temperature, humidity, weather, ventilation, number of coats, and total DFT. Avoid water ponding.
  • Early exposure to moisture: Avoid exposing SUNNOFLAME IP to moisture, rainwater, high humidity, or condensation during the initial stages, as it can lead to defects like blistering and delamination.
SUNNOFLAME IP 1709: Epoxy-based intumescent coating for structural steel
  • Oil, gas, petrochemical, LPG storage tanks, power generation industries, etc
  • Reduces heat penetration, retards flame spread, and minimises smoke generation
  • Quick and easy application
  • It provides high hiding and retards flame spread by forming a thick cellular char blanket when exposed to heat
  • It offers excellent durability, corrosion protection, and fire protection
  • High impact resistance and longer service life, resistant to damage.
  • Ensure total wetting of the substrate by spray applying SUNNOFLAME IP 1709. If necessary, the first coat should be troweled and rolled thoroughly.
  • Overcoat SUNNOFLAME IP 1709 with itself ‘wet on wet’ or within 12 hours of application before contamination occurs.
  • Drying time and overcoating intervals depend on local environmental conditions.
  • For a total dry film thickness greater than 2000 μm, allow a 24-hour interval between each coat of SUNNOFLAME IP 1709 at any temperature.
  • The overcoating time between each coat is based on the desired total dry film thickness. It can vary depending on environmental conditions, number of coats, air temperature, relative humidity, weather conditions, ventilation, etc.
FAQs
How does an Intumescent coating protect steel?

Intumescent coating safeguards steel by expanding when exposed to high temperatures, forming a thick, insulating layer. This swelling creates a protective char that insulates the steel from heat and delays its structural compromise during a fire. The coating transforms into a heat-resistant barrier, preserving the integrity of the underlying steel and allowing more time for evacuation or firefighting measures.

How effective is intumescent paint?

Intumescent paint is highly effective in fire protection, as it expands when exposed to heat, forming a protective layer that insulates and delays steel structural failure during a fire. Its fire-resistant properties make it a crucial element in passive fire protection, enhancing safety in buildings and structures.

What does Intumescent paint do?

Intumescent paint serves as a crucial fire protection measure by expanding when exposed to high temperatures. This expansion creates a thick, insulating char that shields underlying surfaces, typically steel structures, from the effects of heat during a fire. The paint delays structural failure, providing valuable time for evacuation or firefighting efforts and contributing to enhanced fire safety in buildings and infrastructure.

What are the advantages of applying Intumescent coating off-site?
Applying intumescent coating off-site offers advantages such as controlled environmental conditions, ensuring optimal curing and performance. This method allows for precision and consistency in application, minimizing the impact of weather and site variables. Additionally, off-site application often leads to increased efficiency, reduced labor costs, and enhanced overall quality of the intumescent coating.
Why does Steel need intumescent paint?
Steel requires intumescent paint for fire protection. In the event of a fire, the intumescent paint expands, forming a protective char that insulates the steel. This delay in temperature rise helps maintain the structural integrity of the steel, providing crucial time for evacuation and firefighting measures, and enhancing overall fire safety.
